Sound Cards

This “sound card” greatly improves and adjusts the “open string” tongue note on a daxophone. I discovered this phenomenon during a recording session in 2017, after building 63 new tongues during an intensive residency period. I was trying out the tongues to figure out what was best for a particular song, getting some harmony right, and was having trouble with volume loss on certain ranges. In a moment of inspiration, I grabbed a playing card, wedged it between the tongue and the soundboard. Boom! Really great, booming bass. Turns out, a little bit of material between the tongue can help it vibrate more freely. I’ve since tested this approach with a variety of soundboards—even using it to improve the volume of a Reichel tongue on an original Reichel tripod!

For quite a long time, I just used random playing cards, but more recently I discovered that laminated veneer provided a more aesthetically pleasing solution. So, with Catarina Real, I set out on the task of making deliberate micro-paintings that could be joined with the daxophone sets. Screenprinted upon different thicknesses of cherry, maple, birch, walnut, and cypress, these sound cards provide an expressive, modular, and beautiful way to maximize the signal on your instrument.
